Camino Tenerife. Guided Walks
The Signature Journey

Five Days from Volcano to Ocean

One island, walked end to end. You begin at just over 2,100 metres in the silence of the Teide caldera and finish where the Atlantic meets the old north coast. This is not a tour. It is a Camino.

02 · Day by Day

The five days

Each day is its own world. Here is what your feet, your eyes, and your lungs will know from morning to evening.

Day 1 · Volcano

Parador del Teide → Guía de Isora

The caldera, the lava, the long way down

Elevation · 2,150m to 600m
Moderate Mostly downhill 2,150 to 600 m 5-6 hours · ~16 km

Your journey begins high up, around 2,150 metres, right beside the Teide volcano.

The first kilometres run almost flat across an open plateau of black rock and pale pumice. The silence is total. You hear only your own footsteps and the wind moving over the lava. It feels less like a Spanish island and more like walking on the moon, or somewhere on Mars.

Then the trail begins to drop. You leave the National Park behind and the first pines appear, twisted and resin-scented. The world slowly turns green again. By mid-afternoon you reach the old village of Chirche, where the bakery still smells of warm bread and, on a clear day, you can see La Gomera and La Palma floating on the sea. From there it is a gentle descent into Guía de Isora for your first night.

Where you rest, Night 1: Guía de Isora
Day 2 · Mountains

Guía de Isora → Santiago del Teide

The old royal path through pine and almond

Elevation · 600m → 950m → 900m
Moderate Gentle climb 600 → 950 m 5-6 hours · ~16 km

Today you turn your back to the coast and walk up into the heart of the island.

You follow the Camino Real, the old royal path that farmers and pilgrims have used for centuries. It climbs steadily through terraces and almond groves, switching from sun-baked slopes to the cool shade of pine. The air changes as you rise: drier, sharper, scented with resin and wild mint.

Around the halfway point you reach the sleepy village of Arguayo, where a single bar serves coffee and the Chinyero volcano, the last on Tenerife to erupt in 1909, rises quietly behind the rooftops. From here a final easy stretch brings you to Santiago del Teide, a true mountain village with a stone church and a plaza made for tired legs and a cold drink.

Where you rest, Night 2: Santiago del Teide
Day 3 · The Crossing

Santiago del Teide → Teno Alto

Over the wild Teno massif, the day that earns its name

Elevation · 900m → 1,020m → 770m
Challenging Steep up, then down up to 1,020 m 6-7 hours · ~15 km

This is the day you leave the easy world behind and cross into the oldest, wildest part of the island.

You start before sunrise. The climb to Cruz de Gala is the hardest of the whole walk. Steep, honest, unrelenting. But at the top the reward is rare: on a clear morning you can see the Atlantic on both sides of the island at once, the whole world dropping away beneath your boots.

From there you follow ancient goat paths across the Teno highlands, past stone walls built by hands long gone. The land is empty and enormous. You stop for the night in Teno Alto, the most remote point of the entire Camino, where the cheese is made by hand and the night sky has no light to compete with. Stars all the way down to the horizon.

Where you rest, Night 3: Teno Alto / Las Portelas
Day 4 · Coast

Teno Alto → Buenavista → Garachico

Down the cliff to the sea, then along the Atlantic

Elevation · 770m → sea level
Moderate Steep descent, then flat 770 → 0 m 6-7 hours · ~21 km

After the hard mountain day, today is the gift, and it begins with one of the most dramatic descents on the island.

The Camino del Risco drops off the Teno massif in tight switchbacks carved into a sheer cliff face. The ocean appears below you, impossibly blue, growing closer with every turn. You reach the coast at Buenavista del Norte and put your feet straight into the Atlantic.

From there the path turns gentle and flat, following the shore past salt flats, hidden rock pools, and the quiet fishing village of Los Silos. You finish in Garachico, a town the sea once tried to bury under lava in 1706, now considered one of the most beautiful villages in Spain. You swim in the natural lava pools as the sun goes down, then eat fresh fish by the water.

Where you rest, Night 4: Garachico
Day 5 · The Arrival

Garachico → Icod → Puerto de la Cruz

The thousand-year tree and the cliff path home

Elevation · rolling coast, ~50m finish
Easy-Moderate Rolling & flat near sea level flexible · 3-6 hours

The last day belongs to the green north coast, and to a slow, satisfying arrival.

You leave Garachico along the old Camino Real del Norte and climb gently to Icod de los Vinos, home of the Drago Milenario: a dragon tree said to be a thousand years old. Standing beneath it, you feel exactly how old this island really is.

From there you trace the coast through small historic villages until you reach the Rambla de Castro, a cliff path winding through banana plantations with Teide rising behind you and the ocean breaking below. This is the most beautiful stretch of the whole journey, and you walk it slowly on purpose. You arrive in Puerto de la Cruz, at the Plaza del Charco, with a glass of wine and the quiet certainty that you have crossed an entire island on foot. From the volcano to the sea. That is the Camino Tenerife.

Journey's end: Puerto de la Cruz

Frequently asked questions

The practical details, answered.

Where will I sleep?

To keep the true Camino spirit alive, nights are spent in traditional rural guesthouses and occasionally a simple shared mountain hostel. Expect clean, simple comfort and a warm, local atmosphere rather than luxury. It is the perfect way to disconnect and rest after a day on the trail.

How fit do I need to be?

You should be in good general health and comfortable walking around 20km a day. There is no technical climbing involved, but the mountain trails do feature steady ups and downs. The pace is natural, with plenty of time scheduled each day to rest, take photos, and truly experience the landscape.

How big are the groups?

Small and personal. A maximum of six walkers, guided personally by me from the volcano to the ocean.

Which languages do you guide in?

English, German, and Dutch. Whether you come from London, Amsterdam, or Munich, there is no barrier to a good conversation on the trail.

When is the best time to walk?

Year round. Tenerife has no bad season, only different ones.
